Seven people were shot at a park in Washington state on Wednesday, May 28, police said. The Lakewood Police Department said in aFacebook postthat seven people, ranging from ages 16 to 38, were shot at shortly before 8 p.m. local time at Harry Todd Park in the city. Police also said on May 29 that two out of the seven victims remain in serious condition, while one is in critical condition and the four others are in stable condition. Five of the victims were found at the park, while two others walked to local hospitals, police toldKOMO News. "Most of these people were unintentionally struck during this careless act of violence," police wrote in its Facebook post. "Detectives will continue to sort through the information gathered to hold those involved accountable for their actions." WASHINGTON (AP) — An information technology specialist for the Defense Intelligence Agency was charged Thursday with attempting to transmit classified information to a representative of a foreign government, the Justice Department said. Prosecutors say Nathan Vilas Laatsch, 28, of Alexandria, Virginia, was arrested at a location where he had arranged to deposit sensitive records to a person he thought was an official of a foreign government, but who was actually an undercover FBI agent. The identity of the country Laatsch thought he was in communication with was not disclosed, but the Justice Department described it as a friendly, or allied, nation. It was not immediately clear if Laatsch, who was set to make a court appearance Friday, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. The Justice Department said its investigation into Laatsch began in March after officials received a tip that he had offered to provide classified information to another nation. Laatsch wrote in his email that he "did not agree or align with the values of this administration" and was willing to transmit sensitive materials, including intelligence documents, to which he had access, prosecutors said. An undercover agent got in touch with Laatsch, who began transcribing classified information to a notepad and made plans to drop off information that the foreign government representative could pick up in a park. At one drop-off this month, prosecutors say, Laatsch left behind a thumb drive containing multiple typed documents marked up to the Secret and Top Secret levels. In return, prosecutors say, Laatsch said that he was interested in obtaining citizenship from that country because he did not anticipate "things here to improve in the long term." He was arrested Thursday at a prearranged location after making additional plans for a drop-off. ___

Grammy-nominated R&B artist Jaheim is facing multiple animal cruelty charges, according to jail records and court documents. The "Just in Case" singer, whose full name is Jaheim Hoagland, was charged with six counts of animal cruelty in connection with a May 1 arrest, Fulton County Jail records show. The 47-year-old singer's arrest comes after he was reported various times for the unsanitary conditions he allegedly kept his dogs, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by USA TODAY. He has a 2021 third-degree animal cruelty case in New Jersey, in which he is alleged to have kept 15 dogs in his home with "deplorable conditions," the court document says. Hoagland was taken to Fulton County Jail for his current charges, but he was released on May 2 after posting a $35,000 bond. As of May 29, it is unclear if Hoagland has a defense attorney. One incident mentioned in the affidavit occurred on April 27 and involved Fulton County Animal Control officers receiving a call about a malnourished dog roaming through a parking lot in Buckhead. The officers left when Hoagland allegedly approached them in an "aggressive manner" and said they're not "taking the dog," as he was just "outside doing work on the RV." The following day, the officers returned and encountered Hoagland, who was recording them and saying that they "were on private property and this was harassment," according to the affidavit. When the officers explained to the singer that they had received a call about his dog, Hoagland became "irate," refused to identify himself and obstructed the officers' view of the canine. Once officers identified Hoagland, they asked him about the dog, to which the singer explained that his canine's current body state was because he was only 11 months old, but he said he feeds him regularly, according to the affidavit. When Hoagland took the dog out of its kennel, the officers noticed it was "severely emaciated and his rib cage was protruding through the skin," the court document continued. The officers gave Hoagland a written warning, but said they would return to obtain veterinarian records and reassess the dog. After leaving the area, the officers discovered that the phone number given to them was the number of a relative and not Hoagland's, the affidavit says. Fulton County police found Hoagland and his RV in a separate Buckhead parking lot on May 1, and after conducting a search warrant of the vehicle, they took him into custody, the affidavit reads. During the search of the RV, six dogs were located, including a 10-week-old pit bull puppy, two 10-week-old liver colored puppies, a 5-year-old pit bull, an 11-month-old brown hound and a French bulldog, according to the affidavit. All the dogs were removed from the RV and taken to the Fulton County Animal Control's shelter, the court document continued. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska man who was pinned facedown in an icy creek by a 700-pound (318-kilogram) boulder for three hours survived the ordeal with only minor injuries, thanks in part to his wife's quick thinking and lots of luck. Kell Morris' wife held his head above water to prevent him from drowning while waiting for rescuers to arrive after Morris was pinned by the boulder, which crashed onto him during a hike near a remote glacier south of Anchorage. His second stroke of luck came when a sled dog tourism company that operates on the glacier overheard the 911 dispatch and offered up its helicopter to ferry rescuers to the scene, which was inaccessible to all-terrain vehicles. Once rescuers arrived, it took seven men and inflatable air bags to lift the boulder off as he drifted in and out of consciousness. Morris, 61, said he realizes he is probably the luckiest man alive. "And luckier that I have such a great wife," he said Thursday. His wife, Jo Roop, is a retired Alaska State Trooper. They moved to Seward, about 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of Anchorage, from Idaho last fall when she took a job with the local police department. Last Saturday, they wanted to avoid the big crowds that converge on the Kenai Peninsula community during holidays and decided to hike near Godwin Glacier on an isolated and undeveloped trail behind a state prison, Seward Fire Chief Clinton Crites said. Their trail was actually a rocky creek bed lined with large boulders deposited by the glacier. Morris said he noticed dangerous boulders, some weighing up to 1,000 pounds (454 kilograms), along the banks of the creek and avoided them the best he could, until he ran into an area he couldn't pass. "I was coming back and everything, the whole side slid out from under me," he said. He said things became a blur as he tumbled down the embankment about 20 feet (6 meters), landing face down in the water. Then he immediately felt the boulder hit his back in what Crites described as "basically an avalanche of boulders." The way Morris landed, there were rocks under him, in between his legs and around him that caught the weight of the boulder, preventing him from being crushed, Crites said. But the massive rock still had him pinned, and Morris felt intense pain in his left leg and waited for his femur to snap. "When it first happened, I was doubtful that there was going to be a good outcome," Morris said. His wife tried to free him for about 30 minutes, putting rocks under the boulder and trying to roll it off him, before she left to find a cell signal. Amazingly, she only had to walk about 300 yards (274 meters) to connect with 911 and relied on her law enforcement experience to send exact GPS coordinates to dispatch. A volunteer at the neighboring Bear Creek Fire Department heard the call while working at the sled dog tourism operation and diverted the helicopter used to ferry tourists to the scene. Ultimately, firefighters who couldn't navigate their all-terrain vehicles over the boulder field jumped out of the helicopter. By this time, Morris was hypothermic from the cold water running off the glacier, Crites said, and his wife was holding his head out of the water. "I think if we hadn't had that private helicopter assist us, it would have taken us at least another 45 minutes to get to him, and I'm not sure he had that much time," Crites said. The firefighters used two air bags normally reserved to extract people from wrecked vehicles to slightly lift the boulder. "But then it just became an all-hands brute force of 'one, two, three, push,' " Crites said. "And seven guys were able to lift it enough to pull the victim out." An Alaska National Guard helicopter lifted them out of the creek bed with a rescue basket. Morris spent two nights at the local hospital for observation but walked away unscathed. "I fully anticipated a body recovery, not him walking away without a scratch on him," Crites said. Morris, who is now reflecting on his ordeal at home, acknowledged it might have been a little wake-up call to stop doing things like this at his age. "I was very lucky. God was looking out for me," he said. When he and his wife go hiking this weekend, they are going to stick to established trails. "We're going to stop the trailblazing," he said.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico's governor pledged Thursday to improve the island'scrumbling electric gridand boost the economy in her first address after being elected last year as anger intensifies over chronic power outages and an increase in cost-of-living expenses. Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, spoke for nearly two hours as she listed her accomplishmentssince taking office in Januaryand announced multimillion-dollar investments to improve Puerto Rico's health, education and public safety. "Without a doubt, the road has been difficult and full of lessons that we must ensure we don't repeat," she said. González Colón said the upcoming budget includes funds to hire 800 new police officers, $12 million to hire new firefighters and $24 million to recruit resident doctors ashealth professionals continue to move to the U.S. mainland, leaving Puerto Rico with few or no specialists in certain areas. She noted that more than 60%, or roughly $8 billion, of the upcoming general fund budget is slated for health, education and public safety. The budget has not yet been approved. María de Lourdes Santiago, vice president of Puerto Rico's Independence Party, said after the governor's address that the numbers announced are not sufficient given that thousands of certain government employees, including police officers, are needed. González Colón, a supporter of U.S. PresidentDonald Trump, decried federal bureaucracy during her address, noting her administration would keep pushing to free some $18 billion in federal funds set aside to improvePuerto Rico's power grid, which Hurricane Maria razed in September 2017 as a Category 4 storm. She also renewed her pledge to cancel the government's contract with Luma Energy, a private company that oversees the transmission and distribution of power in Puerto Rico. "The termination of this contract will be a reality," she said as supporters stood up and applauded. González Colón said reliable power is essential to attract investment as she promisedto keep attracting more manufacturing to Puerto Rico. In upcoming months, she said she would announce the expansion of five industries on the island. The length of her address and the speed at which she sometimes delivered it surprised some. Political analyst and university professor Jorge Schmidt Nieto said it seemed like a ploy to distract those who have criticized her administration of inaction and the government of so far not approving many laws. "She tried to bring an optimistic tone because she knows she has received a lot of criticism," Schmidt Nieto said. Another who criticized González was Pablo José Hernández, Puerto Rico's representative in Congress and president of the opposition Popular Democratic Party: "If one word describes the start of this government, that word is disorder." He noted that in the past five months, González has presented three candidates for Puerto Rico's secretary of state, two candidates for its justice department and another two candidates for its labor department. None of those positions have been filled as González's party has failed so far to approve her nominees.
